I create unique pieces using unconventional and obsolete findings encased in sterling silver bases. The presence of cracked bus stop glass, old news paper articles, rusted plates, broken fishhooks and buttons give me the opportunity to perpetuate the life of these everyday use objects. A contrast is sometimes created between the imposing metallic base and the resin imprisoned images. This resin also gives a graphic glimpse at the photos and the mixed medias which are put together to create small jewel size paintings. Furthermore, the contrast created between the different materials is omnipresent in my pieces. The fragile and ephemeral qualities of the graphics imprisoned in a transparent resin clash with the decaying and industrial aspect of metallic masses or pieces of concrete. The idea behind this method is to give the material a neglected aspect by breaking, twisting or creasing it, creating a look which reminds us of the passing time in the world around us. The distortion of the sterling silver invites us to challenge the nature of this noble metal and how it must be presented through a high quality finish and polished workmanship.
Biographie :
Mélanie Denis, artist-jeweller, surprised everyone with her statement: « I create anti-jewellery ». For her, the “anti” is more than a corporal decorative element: the ring, necklace and bracelet must be able to tell their own story and to “exist as an artistic object”. Unconventional or obsolete materials can be found in her creations. The use of abribus shattered glass, damaged fishing hooks, broken buttons and rusty steel plaques prolong the life of these materials by giving them a “raison d’être”. The recuperation of these daily materials comes from the will to un-trivialize everyday objects that go unnoticed.
